In the tradition of the Hindu-Vaishnava Sampradayas, we use the Ekadashi as an occasion for regular fasting.

Ekadashi fasting is held twice a month on the eleventh day of every fortnight following the traditional Hindu lunar calendar. As such, one is celebrated during the waxing phase of the moon (Shukla Paksha) and the other during the waning phase (Krishna Paksha). Ekadashi is derived from the Sanskrit term ‘Ekadasi’ and means eleven.

Another word in Sanskrit which is used for the term fasting is ‘Upabaas’. But considering the literal aspect Upabaas actually means ‘Upa’ 'near to God' and ‘baas’ 'to sit/sitting'.

Accordingly we can suppose restraining of daily life habits at least once every two weeks (reducing eating and limiting acting) makes us ready to find closer to God.

If we take the former Vaisnavas / Acharyas as examples and follow them with dedication and confidence through singing, worship, Japa meditation and fasting, then we will undoubtedly approach the Divine.

In this sense, in the tradition of Nimbarka Vaishnava Sampradaya, we are used to devote ourselves to the form of God as Shri Radhakrishna and to seek the proximity of His / Her lotus feet.

Vegetarianism and abstention from intoxicants

We do not prepare non-vegetarian meals (no meat, fish and egg) and also avoid the use of onions and garlic in Prasadam (food offered to Shri Radhakrishna). furthermore, we refrain from consuming intoxicants and smoking.

When living a family life, the rule of renouncing sex should also be taken into account on Ekadashi day.

On Ekadashi day, physically weak individuals should adjust their food to their well-being. Others may try to consume no cereal products such as rice, wheat, millet, etc. for 24 hours and instead eat roots, vegetables and fruits. Sometimes buckwheat or corn is used as compensation.
